Title: Burying Water (Burying Water #1)
Another well written book by K. A. Tucker. She's officialy one of my favourite authors. It's full of suspense and questions, mostly because of the structure of the book - "now" written from Alex's point of view and "then" from Jesse's.
We meet a girl in a hospital, she's terribly wounded and doesn't remember who she is and how she's got her injuries. Hospital stuff calls her Jane Doe. That's "now".
Car mechanic Jesse stops one day in the rain to help a stranger with a flat tire and recieves a thank-you kiss. Later he meets a wealthy man Victor and his beautiful, young wife Alexandria who happens to be the stranger he helped. That's "then".
As the present and past intertwine, we learn more about this couple. Their undeniable chemistry and the beggining of their love.
Alexandria decided to leave Victor - not only he constantly cheats on her, he beats her. Moreover she's not alone anymore, she's hot Jesse now.
“He has feelings for you. Deep, consuming feelings. The kind that dominate your thoughts and control your decisions. And feed your soul.”
I loved seeing how Alex (or Water, as she decided she wanted to be called) is still pulled towards Jesse. Doesn't matter that she remembers nothing, he's still part of her. He's still her safe haven.
“He said the truth is like that water: it doesn’t matter how hard you try to bury it; it’ll always find some way back to the surface. It’s resilient.”
Up until the last couple of pages we don't know what really happened to Alex and why. Not many authors can pull this off - I usually have a pretty accurate guess how things happened.
And when I say couple of pages I mean that literary. [SPOILER: She doesn't regain her memory fully in the end. Jesse and Alex don't even say "I love you" to each other, that's how fast it is. He just moved in with her.] The ending was pretty rushed and disappointing. I read the whole book in one breath and wasn't left gasping. I thought: "That's it? That's all? Have I lost chapter somewhere?"
