ARC review: Shattered Blue (The Light Trilogy, #1) by Lauren Bird Horowitz

3.5 stars! ****

Author: Lauren Bird Horowitz

Title: Shattered Blue (The Light Trilogy, #1)

For Noa and Callum, being together is dangerous, even deadly. From the start, sixteen-year-old Noa senses that the mysterious transfer student to her Monterey boarding school is different. Callum unnerves and intrigues her, and even as she struggles through family tragedy, she’s irresistibly drawn to him. Soon they are bound by his deepest secret: Callum is Fae, banished from another world after a loss hauntingly similar to her own.

But in Noa’s world, Callum needs a special human energy, Light, to survive; his body steals it through touch—or a kiss. And Callum’s not the only Fae on the hunt. When Callum is taken, Noa must decide: Will she sacrifice everything to save him? Even if it means learning their love may not be what she thought?

I read the first quarter while I was on painkillers (who runs the world? painkillers! who runs the world? painkillers!) so it's a bit fuzzy. I remember next to nothing from it and what I remember confuses the hell out of me. Or maybe I remember it correctly and it just progressed that fast.

Noa's sister died recently and her whole world changed. Her mother crubled and withdrew to herself. Now she's the one who takes care of her little sister Sasha who's three years old. Noa had to move back home from her dorm to do that and commutes to her highschool. She's a poet with an open heart.

Callum is the new student at Noa's highschool. There's something irresistible about him to her. His soul calls to hers. But he's not what he seems to be. You see, he's not a man. He's a fae.

"He was a creature, the Banished son of a terrible man, an exile to this world where his magic drained to nothing - unless he stole mortals' Light. Light: the essence of their future happiness, their potentional joy. He sucked it out and stole it, in order to feel alive."

They've known each other for a week maybe and already it was the biggest love the world has ever seen. Maybe I don't remember the passage where we skipped couple of days, weeks or months. Or maybe it's like every other YA where love is formed within minutes.

And like in true YA Callum isn't the only guy. Judah appears out of nowhere and form the love triangle. And Judah isn't just some guy. No. He's Callum's brother.

I like the idea of this book. The fact that it shows "fairies" that are the complete opposite of Tinker Bell. The idea of four kinds of fairies that have a different abilities is actually great.

The first two thirds were pretty boring to be honest. That might be the result of me not liking both Noa and Callum. But then Judah came and I think I heard the angels sing. He's the troublemaker, the fae bad boy with a broken heart.

The last third was a whirlwind of action. It was jampacked and thrilling. And there was almost no Callum which was a bonus.

But once again it was rushed. The "relationship" between Noa and Judah progressed even faster than her's and Callum's. Like they've known each other for maybe three days where he said:

"You, Noa. You have no gift, no trick, no magic, but I love you. I have been in love with you for some time. I've ignored it, buried it, denied it, because I thought you deserved someone good, like Callum."

Dammit. You've ignored it? You didn't have time to realize you like her, let alone love her. You were asleep for a lot of that time. Just shut up, think it through and then slap yourself.

But overall the ending was quite good. Something finally started to happen and it mindblowned me over and over again. Sometimes I felt like it made the perfect sense and sometimes I felt like it was a bit forced.

I'll definitely read the next parts. I'm curious about what the future will bring to those three.

Oh, and Noa? Keep you hands of Judah. That one's mine (yeah. I already married us in my mind, so I don't want to be heartbroken, but I'd get it if Lauren Bird Horowitz decided she'd want to pair Noa with him, because he's so damn awesome).
