ARC review: The Last One (The One, #1) by Tawdra Kandle

4 stars! ****

Author: Tawdra Kandle

Title: The Last One (The One, #1)

Meghan Hawthorne is restless. The last year has been a roller coaster: her widowed mother just married a long-time family friend. Her younger brother unexpectedly became a father and a husband. Everyone's life is changing. . .except for hers. As she begins her final summer of college, Meghan's looking for excitement and maybe a little romance. Nothing serious; this girl just wants to have fun.

But the only man for Meghan turns out to be the last one she expects.

Sam Reynolds doesn't need excitement, and he doesn't want romance. Fun is out of the question. He's been the steady, responsible one since his parents were killed, and serious is his way of life.

When Sam rescues Meghan alongside a dark Georgia backroad, she falls hard for his deep brown eyes and slow drawl. But making him see her as more than just a party girl won't be easy. Sam's tempted by the fiery young artist, even as he realizes that giving into his feelings will mean radical change. . .maybe more than he can handle.

Nobody ever said love was simple.

My first book by Tawdra Kandle, I didn't read any reviews so I had no idea what to expect.. and I was not disappointed! The beginning was a bit slower but not totally boring. Once things started happening I couldn't keep my eyes off it.

Meghan is art major at university, she's got the "love them and leave them" attitude and commitement is a foreign word to her. One day she and her BFF drove to different (yet close-by) town to try out a new bar. Meg's hammered, barely coherent and their car stops in the middle of the road.

Mystery stranger aka Sam helps them. He's a farmer, reliable, grumpy and if you see him smile once a week you're lucky. When he carries Meg to a rental car, their eyes meet and they instantly connect.

They meet again once again and he's rude as fuck so they part. Then they meet once again, because Meg volunteered to teach art to students all over the US. The place she ended up was the only place she didn't want to be. In his house.

Sam's little sister volunteered to host the art teacher for the summer and because there are no hotels in the little town, Meg has to stay there and bear with him. Sam is even more hostile now then he was before and the attraction he feels towards her doesn't help.

I really enjoyed reading this one. Their relationship wasn't rushed and it was nice to watch the build up. What got annoying after a while was the constant talk about "things being only temporary" - it was on every third page.

Both of them were likable characters and they seemed to match really well. There wasn't an excessive number of sex scenes and they actually build a relationship in the two months she spend in his house.

It was a bit shorter book but I didn't mind. Everything that needed to be said was said. If it was longer I think it'd get repetitive.

The ending wasn't rushed and seemed natural. I was really content with the way things ended.

I'm looking forward to the next instalement where I'll find out more about Sam's sister. I think she's got a lot to tell.
