Review: The Crown of Embers (Fire and Thorns, #2) by Rae Carson

3.5 stars! ****

Author: Rae Carson

Title: The Crown of Embers (Fire and Thorns, #2)

She does not know what awaits her at the enemy's gate.

Elisa is a hero.

She led her people to victory over a terrifying, sorcerous army. Her place as the country's ruler should be secure. But it isn't.

Her enemies come at her like ghosts in a dream, from foreign realms and even from within her own court. And her destiny as the chosen one has not yet been fulfilled.

To conquer the power she bears, once and for all, Elisa must follow a trial of long-forgotten—and forbidden—clues, from the deep, hidden catacombs of her own city to the treacherous seas. With her go a one-eyed spy, a traitor, and the man whom—despite everything—she is falling in love with.

If she's lucky, she will return from this journey. But there will be a cost.

I had a bit of a problem to get into the storyline. I was still angry about Humberto being dead and after reading the first two pages I've found out that Hector finally shaved his mustache and I was content. Didn't feel the need to read more.

But I wanted to know how it ended up so I started reading again and it got interesting somewhere in the middle.

Elisa is gueen, but she doesn't really know how to rule and she isn't respected by her subordinates. She still doesn't know how to channel the power from her Godstone and there are riots happening too often.

Several times someone tried to kill her and her council says that she should get married - to someone wealthy and with influence. Elisa is not happy, her suitors are boring and the one she could stand turns out to be actually gay. Moreover she realized that her feeling for Hector are much stronger than she ever imagined.

Somewhere is a mystery land where she could learn how to channel her power and more importantly where she could earn more of that power. So she sets out on a dangerous way with one goal in her mind. Find that place.

I liked this one a bit more than the first part. I missed Humberto and even Cosmé. I hoped that she'll be part of this one too, but she wasn't. At least Belén was there..

Elisa still had that annoying trait to her but in the last five pages I started to like her. Maybe that'll change in again when I start readind the last book but hopefully not.

And once Hector got rid of his freaking mustache I realized that I really like him. He's cool. And hot! (In the first half book I was still #teamHumberto but in the end I switched. I'm #teamHector now. Sorry Humberto, if you weren't dead you'd still be my number one!)

Sometimes it was too long. Some passages could be shorter and some didn't even have to be there.

Overall once I got into it, I had to finish it. I'm prying my eyes open as I am writing this review but I had to know how it ended!

I'm looking forward to the next book (I have feeling that there'll be more characters from the first book).
