Review: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen

5 stars!*****

Author: Jane Austen

Title: Pride and Prejudice

While some may say that the whole story is way too boring and slow-moving with lots of descriptions, others may say that this is the aspect that makes it so readable, successful and popular.
The first paragraph basically says what the whole story is about and sets a certain atmosphere. Back then it might have been interpreted in serious manner, because it shows exactly what the society was like. In twenty-first century people can explain it the same way or look at it from different point of view and see it as sarcastic and ironic (mostly because Austen herself did not get, or even wanted to get married). Depends on each reader how he takes it and with which attitude he reads the book.

In the first chapter we meet Mrs. Bennet who is bit foolish, incredibly rude and laud woman whose only goal in life is to find her daughters good-looking, wealthy husbands. Her polar opposite is her husband, Mr. Bennet, who is a sarcastic man who loves taunting his wife. Then there are five Bennet sisters – Jane, Elizabeth, Mary, Catherine and Lydia.

The whole book revolves around Elizabeth and her journey. How she meets Mr. Darcy, how they differ and how they are similar. We can watch how both of them grow throughout the story. At first Elizabeth is too stuck in her books and head to see behind the mask Mr. Darcy wears all the time. And in the end he learns how to put the mask down and she starts to see that not everything is as it seems.

The ending is quite predictable, but satisfying. The characters are all mostly black and white, but there were some pretty surprising scenes.

I personally really enjoyed it and reread it quite a lot of times and would recommend it to anyone who wants to relax while reading. Pride and prejudice, a cup of tea and winter sweater equals a perfect afternoon.
