Review: Nowhere But Here (Thunder Road, #1) by Katie McGarry

4.5 stars! *****

Author: Katie McGarry

Title: Nowhere But Here (Thunder Road, #1)

Seventeen-year-old Emily likes her life the way it is: doting parents, good friends, good school in a safe neighborhood. Sure, she's curious about her biological father—the one who chose life in a motorcycle club, the Reign of Terror, over being a parent—but that doesn't mean she wants to be a part of his world. But when a reluctant visit turns to an extended summer vacation among relatives she never knew she had, one thing becomes clear: nothing is what it seems. Not the club, not her secret-keeping father and not Oz, a guy with suck-me-in blue eyes who can help her understand them both.

Oz wants one thing: to join the Reign of Terror. They're the good guys. They protect people. They're…family. And while Emily—the gorgeous and sheltered daughter of the club's most respected member—is in town, he's gonna prove it to her. So when her father asks him to keep her safe from a rival club with a score to settle, Oz knows it's his shot at his dream. What he doesn't count on is that Emily just might turn that dream upside down.

No one wants them to be together. But sometimes the right person is the one you least expect, and the road you fear the most is the one that leads you home.

There is a reason why this book was nominated for the Best Young Adult Fiction of 2015 because it's fucking awesome.

It was original, held me in suspense most of the time and if I held my breath everytime my mind was blown I'd be in a hospital.

But there were couple of little details that made a four star read instead of a five star read.

Emily has it all. She's your typical good girl. She a good student, has a great friends and the future anyone wish they had. But her father is not really her dad. She met her birth father when she was ten and then she met him yearly. Her mother fears her hometown and didn't step there in the last seventeen years but when she recieves news that Em's grandmother died she rushes back.

As it turned out her grandma wasn't dead but will be soon. And as it turned out her father is not only a part of a MC but her grandfather "rules" it. And opposing MC wants to hurt Emily so the adults decide that she should stay with her birth father Eli for the summer because he'll keep her safe.

Emily is not really happy with their choice. She's scared of the MC, her father makes her nervous and her not so dead grandma too. To top it of she is babysitted by Oz who is dangerously charming and handsome. And asshole.

At first Emily was too scared of her own shadow and unwilling to even talk to her grandparents or father. I get that she doesn't know them and is intimidated by them, but still.. She overcame it in the end but it took her a lot of time.

In the beginning she was really selfish and self centered. Little scared girl who wanted back to her mamma's nest. As the book progressed so did Em's character. She started to think about others and she stated to actually act on her feelings instead of doing just what she thought was right.

Oz was portrayed as the "bad boy" but he wasn't. Not really. Yes, he's a biker and he used to hook up with girls but he has morals and cares about everyone in the MC.

Their relationship progressed slowly but I could see that they had a connection. But in the end I felt that it progressed too slowly.

Also the thing about the big secret? I honestly didn't see that one coming (but probably should have) and I didn't get why it was such a bih secret. If someone took their time to explain it to Emily, she'd have understand even before her character development. Probably.

I liked that I had no idea about what the secret was going to be about. Doesn't happen often lately. The idea of the secret is not really original but the way it was written made it hard to guess and if you though you had some inkling the next page made you second guess it.

Great writing that kept me on my toes.

But all in all I really enjoyed this one, and I'll be waiting unpatiently for the next books in the series.
